New 2023 SEER Rating Changes in Greenville

Every few years, it’s required for manufacturers to update their energy-efficiency standards, introducing all-new equipment lineups that are more capable and efficient than before.

Whether you’re planning on replacing your equipment or installing an HVAC system in a newly built home in Greenville, it’s crucial to remain up-to-date on the Department of Energy’s regulations for minimum efficiency. As of January 1, 2023, all newly installed air conditioners must have a SEER rating higher than 14.

What Is a SEER Rating?

SEER is an acronym for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The rating measures the efficiency of your heating and air conditioning system, similar to how miles per gallon indicate fuel efficiency on a vehicle.

The higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient your system will be. That means your system will require less energy to keep your home comfortable, resulting in lower monthly cooling expenses.

In 2023, regional standards for HVAC systems will be measured through an upgraded metric system known as SEER2. Under this new metric system, an air conditioner with a SEER rating of 15 would have a SEER2 rating of 14.3.

How To Check Your HVAC System’s SEER Rating

Homeowners can locate their system’s SEER rating by going to the back of the unit and looking for a yellow and black “energy guide” sticker. The sticker is typically located on the side of the condenser unit.

If the sticker is too worn to read or has fallen off the unit, you may still be able to locate your system’s SEER rating by searching for a piece of paper taped to the front of the air handler. This is usually where an HVAC technician will list the performance data of your system from your most recent maintenance appointment.

Another place that homeowners can look for the SEER rating on their unit is by referring to the model number. Some manufacturers include this information at the beginning of the model number on the data plate.

For example, if the model number reads “XC21” and is followed by a series of other numbers and dashes, you can assume the SEER rating is 21 based on this information. Suppose you have trouble reading the model number or understanding what it means. In that case, you can always contact the manufacturer or a local dealer to ask for the rating of your specific air conditioner.

What SEER Rating Is Required for Homes in Greenville?

Beginning January 1, 2023, HVAC equipment in Greenville must meet the following standards:

  • Air ConditionersSplit units using less than 45K BTU must have a minimum SEER rating of 15; split units using more than 45K BTU must have a minimum SEER rating of 14.5
  • Heat PumpsAir-source heat pump heating efficiency must be at least 8.8 HSPF
